The Sustainable Aquaculture Systems Supporting Atlantic Salmon (SAS²) project is funded by a $10M grant awarded by the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture. It is a natural extension of the 2019 National Sea Grant funded Recirculating Aquaculture Salmon Network (RAS-N), whose work helped to identify challenges and bottlenecks defined by industry partners and community stakeholders. A number of these challenges will be addressed by SAS² collaborators from academic and federal research institutes and industry, including partners from Iceland and Norway.
The long-term goal of SAS² is to support a sustainable U.S. land-based Atlantic salmon RAS industry that expands the domestic production of finfish with decreased environmental impacts, increased waste capture and enhanced and enhanced biosecurity.
Two-thirds of SAS² is dedicated to research, with the remaining third split between education, workforce development, extension, and community engagement. More information about individual objectives can be viewed here.
